Our Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum
At Eaton Bray Academy we believe that our Modern Foreign Language curriculum (French) reflects the following:
- Skills to discover, communicate and respect other cultures
- Knowledge of how to converse, read and write in French
- An understanding of other cultures and languages which are spoken around the world
- Children will co-operate and work collaboratively with one another through role-play, conversations and activities
Through French we encourage children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world and those from different cultures. Our teaching enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are essential to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for a love of learning languages for now and beyond.

We believe that French contributes to our school’s values and beliefs and enables pupils to discover a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others, “bilingualism is an incredible gift to give to a child. It goes beyond just learning another language, it broadens mental development, thought patterns and world perspective.” French lessons are inclusive and provide a safe environment for children to be able to take risks, to challenge themselves and achieve their true potential as high expectations are set. Children’s learning is deepened through an exciting range of activities including cultural days and trips to France.
To do this, pupils will experience, as they go through the school, a sequenced programme of learning so that they have an understanding and knowledge of these topics. As a consequence of experiencing a rich, deep and varied French curriculum, children will have the knowledge and skills to converse and communicate in another language and develop a genuine love of learning and provide strong foundations for their future language learning.
